Helen Hill

Helen Hill died last Thursday. She was a bright star and beautiful human being in the experimental animation community and in the world.
Even though I didn’t know Helen Hill she was often in my thoughts. For me she was a hero or legend because of the way she was able to make her films and live such a full, vibrant life. She really believed in the handmade or DIY process of making films. This for me was a very positive and affirming way to make films. Something that I saw that expressed the true spirit of experimental animation.
I loved her refreshing approach to an art form that can be very overwhelming. It was like Helen Hill was this wonderful person saying, “Look you can have a rich life and make films” and, “Look I’ve figured it out and I can help you.”
Well, Helen Hill did help me even from afar and her films “Scratch and Crow” and “Mouseholes” were so inspiring for me.
Thank you Helen Hill.
My heart and thoughts go out to all her family and friends who loved her so much and her dear husband and little boy.

Happy New Year!
A sketch of my brother who was visiting from New Zealand.

Another sketch of my desk demonstrating my mess insanity.

I’ve been contemplating the beauty of this glorious ship.
Also, Shash’s wonderful old family pictures.
We saw “INLAND EMPIRE” last week and loved it.
Has anyone else seen it?

Family
Filed in Personal, December 11, 2006, 11:26 pmFour large boxes arrived from the family of my recently deceased great-aunt. Inside the boxes we found my great-grandmother’s wedding dress from the late nineteenth century, scrapbooks, photos, and stacks and stacks of letters dating from the 1890’s.
Here are a few of the letters:

My favorite is this daguerreotype of my great-great-grandma dated 1863 sitting next to her sister. My great-great-grandma is on the right:

I love the sisters’ hands and how they interlock and sweetly hold each other.
